Winter project

It's January 1st 2016.   Got over to the boat just to check the bilge.  While there I looked at all the fake wood on the inside of the boat.   Back in the day when this boat was built laminate simulated wood grain was the hot thing.    Think 1966.  50 years ago!!  The seat uprights had this stuff on it and was pealing off.  So I took it all off.  Not sure where this is going to go.  The plywood it was attached to is not in bad shape.  I could sand what is there and then stain  and varnish.  The other option is to find some teak and redo what was there.   The old stuff came off in one piece so it could be used as a template.

  1. Just a thought ..... I would be tempted to pull the veneer off, fill any holes and paint it white. A white painted interior with varnished trim makes a cabin nice and airy and bright. Is that wooden floor teak? might varnish up a treat!

    1. I did pull off all that veneer. The glue was shot. I did get the sander on the ply and it cleaned up real nice. If I use white paint I'll probably have to paint the entire glass portion of the interior. Not ready to do that yet. I'm going to stain the plywood a teak color and then try some varnish. The floor is teak and it's 50+ years old. I tried to sand it last season but it's like iron. That's another project.

    2. Sounds as though you have a plan - that's good - best of luck with that (Although luck's not what's needed - just hard work!) - and a happy new year to you.

  2. My A30 has that veneer on the only two existing original bulkheads. I've sanded the veneer (which is well-adhered) and I'm going to paint it white. In the areas of the cabin I've reconstructed, my plan is to paint the wood in the area of the settees white and use teak or mahogany to trim. That's a classic Herreshoff look.

  3. A more expensive alternative would be to glue a new veneer to the settee fronts.

    1. I am looking at teak veneer if the stain and varnish doesn't work.
